By antrotherapy we mean a way of thermal treatment in which a person stays in natural or artificial places with particular microclimates which can be: hot or cold, dry or damp.
The hot microclimate antrotherapy, such as the one present in the grottos of the Terme Stufe di Nerone, is typical for the use of environments such as to cause perspiration in the patient.
The great amount of relative moisture (about 90-95%) is due to the presence of hot water springs. Saturation of (water vapour) steam in the room blocks the normal skin perspiration and increases the heat perception, causing a perspiring reaction. The temperature we can find in these areas is between 48°C and 54°C.
At the Terme Stufe di Nerone there are two natural grottos, with a high steam saturation, at a temperature swinging few degrees, between 52°C and 55°C.
The therapeutic action of natural stoves is essentially linked to the intense heat where one is immersed: perspiring properties are important.
In addition staying in a steamy hot room causes vasodilatation with deep vascularisation of normally not much vascularised tissues as well, such as tendons and ligaments, aiding muscular relaxation and making easier the removal of catabolite (or slag) as i.e. lactic acid.
By balneotherapy we mean therapy based essentially on the use of thermal waters, in the form of showers or baths in thermal water.
Therapeutic actions of such a kind of treatment can be so schematically described :
- action linked to heat: myo-relaxing and vasodilatating It causes deep vascularisation of normally not much vascularised tissues (increased ligament elasticity)
- action linked to movement in the absence of gravity: exercises of active mobilization of joints carrying load.
- Non-specific and stimulating anti-inflammatory action
- psychological action: staying in a pleasant place, together with beloved people, favours functional recovery.
